I have been practising as a Speech and Language Therapist since I graduated from City University, London, with a BSc Hons in 2010. I have mainly worked for the educational divisions of charities both as an employee and, more recently, on a freelance basis. I have worked with children across the age ranges – in nursery, primary and secondary mainstream school contexts – both those with Educational Health Care Plans and those without this provision but who still need extra support. I have worked as a key member of wider, multi-disciplinary teams where I collaborated with teachers, Ed Psychs, SENCos, OTs and art therapists and I have maintained many of the relationships built through this experience.
In 2020, I set up “Speech Bubbles” to bring together the favourite aspects of my experience to date – “Speech” – working to enhance communication and language proficiency and “Bubbles” – focusing on supporting children to develop stronger social skills relevant to their educational and social context. Since setting up, and flowing from the additional qualifications I have studied for, I have added “Sleep Bubbles” – centred on supporting parents with paediatric speech concerns and “Brick Bubbles” – for the specific provision of Lego therapy.
I am mum to four children who all love to play with my speech therapy resources and games (and never put them back!). This has allowed me to see first-hand (not just in a textbook) the stages at which language develops and has emphasised that there are no fixed language milestones but progression ranges specific to each child. I have found, at home and at work, each child has their own speech and language battlefield and I have learned to value the intuitive voice of parents and their views on their own child’s development as a critical input to the therapy plans I devise and provide to assist children on their journey to communication proficiency.
Since attaining my degree and qualifying as a therapist I have gained further qualifications in speech, language, cognition and social skills as well as the relevant safeguarding training.
The courses I have completed are shown in the table here.
